Martini – A cocktail made of gin (or sometimes vodka) and dry vermouth.
There are questions that need to be asked when someone orders a martini, a good server or bartender should immediately ask these questions to make sure they get it correct and to offer confidence to the guest that we know what we are doing.
Gin or Vodka? Do you prefer a particular brand?
‘Up’ or ‘On The Rocks’
Do you like any vermouth at all? How much?
Olives or a Twist.
Do you like it ‘shaken’ or ‘stirred’?
Dirty? Blue Cheese Olives?
It should also be understood that the ‘original’ recipe (around 1910) called for half gin and half dry vermouth. Nowadays… (2011) the vermouth should be about a 1/2 ounce for gin martinis and 1/4 or less for vodka martinis. With a total of 3 ounces of spirit for each.
Gin Martini – 2 1/2 ounces Gin and 1/2 ounce Dry Vermouth
Vodka Martini – 2 3/4 ounces Vodka and 1/4 ounce Dry Vermouth
